Inspired by Alessandro Michele’s philosophy that the way you dress is an expression of your personality, and that men and women should feel genuinely free to enjoy self-expression, the Gucci DIY service for unisex bombers, denim and leather jackets, shoes and women’s tailoring has been launched at the Mumbai Gucci Galleria store for this week. This is in addition to the personalization service for men’s tailoring and shoes that is already available in India.
With Gucci DIY, Michele has handed over the design reins to the customers of the House enabling them to express themselves and their love for the label freely through personalization. Like, the silk bomber jackets (with reversible style) can have additional embroidery and patches. Or the Japanese denim jackets that come in two washes and two fits can be lined either in silk or shearling and also have the option of different patches. But the customization is really centered on the wide range of motifs that have been drawn from Gucci’s lexicon of symbols like kingsnakes, flowers and bees which can either appear discreetly on the cuff or collar or sometimes on the back of tailored or denim jacket.
For the women’s RTW collection, Gucci DIY programme also includes exclusive made-to-order pieces like leather jackets where even the sleeves and jacket length can be customized. These statement leather pieces feature metal studs, rhinestones and multi-coloured hand-painted flowers and can be monogrammed with leather patches either on the chest or left arm. Then there are chunky cardigans with intarsia floral designs that can have letters adorned with flowers hand-embroidered onto the garment. But our personal favourite were the belted robes in washed silk-satin with all over multi-coloured floral embroidery. The satin robes can also feature hand-embroidered letter with floral decoration.
And the men’s RTW collection shows a fresh commitment to tailoring. There are several silhouettes for day and eveningwear for you to choose from along with a wide range of fabrics and buttons and a host of monogram lettering options. Even for the selection of linings, Gucci offers a variety of bright patterns in silk foulard that can be used for jacket linings as well as trouser waistbands.
But the showstoppers of the Gucci DIY service are the dressy mules that are available in variety of materials and colours and can be personalized with a horsebit (in silver or gold), embossed initials on the insole along with a tiger’s head patch (in yellow, green or blue).
Well, the Gucci DIY service is available till April 6, 2019. So, what are you waiting for? Get ready to guccify your wardrobe by interpreting the Gucci aesthetics in your own idiosyncratic way while keeping the spirit of Alessandro Michele’s vision alive.
