In a move that has sent seismic ripples through the fashion world, Matthieu Blazy, the creative force behind Bottega Veneta’s resurgence, is poised to step into the hallowed halls of Chanel as its new artistic director. For a house draped in its founder’s mystique and still shimmering with Karl Lagerfeld’s iconic reinvention, Blazy’s appointment marks a decisive pivot.

Chanel’s expectations for Matthieu Blazy as its artistic director center on his ability to honor the house’s rich heritage while injecting fresh, modern energy into its designs. Blazy, celebrated for his meticulous craftsmanship, artisanal minimalism and contemporary aesthetic during his tenure at Bottega Veneta, is expected to strike a balance between Chanel’s timeless codes—such as tweed suits, pearls, and classic silhouettes—and an evolution that resonates with a younger, global audience.

The Maison likely anticipates that Blazy will continue Karl Lagerfeld’s tradition of blending innovation with Chanel’s Parisian sophistication while avoiding the challenges that his predecessor, Virginie Viard, faced in redefining Chanel’s identity. With his proven ability to elevate quiet luxury, Chanel will look to Blazy to bring a fresh artistic perspective that aligns with the modern luxury consumer, particularly through exceptional craftsmanship and innovative storytelling.

Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel’s President of Fashion, expressed confidence that Blazy can navigate the house’s “codes and heritage” while fostering dialogue with the studio and artisans. Pavlovsky continues, “His audacious personality, innovative and powerful approach to Creation, and dedication to craftsmanship and beautiful materials will take CHANEL in exciting new directions.” This suggests Chanel expects him to seamlessly integrate his artistic vision with the savoir-faire of its ateliers. Ultimately, Chanel hopes for a renewed sense of energy and cultural relevance under Blazy’s leadership, solidifying its status in a competitive luxury landscape.

Alain Wertheimer, Global Executive Chairman, and Leena Nair, Global CEO of Chanel added: “Matthieu Blazy is one of the most gifted designers of his generation. His vision and talent will reinforce the energy of the Brand and our position as a leader in luxury. Under Bruno Pavlovsky’s leadership, we are confident that Matthieu Blazy will continue to shape what’s next and write a new page in CHANEL’s Creation.”
