When asked about skincare nowadays, all of us are in ready-set-go mood to share our skincare regimes that cover everything from cleansers, toners, serums, acids, moisturizers and more (#GuiltyNotGuilty). But what if we switch the conversation to the scalp care? Well, some of you may confuse it with haircare or find it surprising (and maybe a little boring) to talk about scalps. And probably even your haircare routine is all about wash-and-go with occasional dry shampoo moments. But that’s not enough. We need to show our neglected scalp some TLC just like we do it for our skin. I mean, it is an extension of your skin; just a little north of your forehead.

Oh! And if you still confusing it with haircare, then you should know that our smoothening serums and hydrating masks are solely beneficial for our strands. And to put it simply, scalp care is right at the center of a delightful intersection between skincare and haircare i.e. our current favourite pastime combined with the lifelong pursuit of happy hair gives you a healthy scalp.

So, a happy head of hair is truly a balance of healthy scalp and hair. But our never-ending love for dry shampoos and texture sprays and picture-perfect blow-dried, curled or straightened hair ends up damaging hair and scalp. It isn’t surprising though?! After all, most of the time, we don’t even realize that we are damaging our scalp as well. And then increasing pollution levels and extra sun exposure certainly adds to an already congested scalp. This is why scalp care isn’t just centered on the idea of treating the usual noticeable problems like dandruff or itchy scalp, but is about specialized products targeted at scalp health and to undo the damage that we endure upon our scalp. And to address scalp care, brands have taken inspiration from the scalp and skin connect and created formulations by blending the typical skincare ingredients (from Hyaluronic Acid to Niacinamide and Salicylic Acid) in haircare products like Aveda’s Pramāsana Purifying Scalp Cleanser and Biologique Recherché Hair Lotion P50 Capillaire. And these two happen to be absolutely perfect for a deep scalp cleanse.

Well, we certainly can’t leave the favourite (and easiest) home ready for healthy hair and scalp – oiling out of this conversation. From coconut oil to almond oil and bhringraj oil, they all leave hair and scalp nourished along with making hair soft, smooth and shiny. But the trick is to use a cleansing shampoo for oil removal to avoid multiple washes and resultant dryness after all that would just undo the effects of oiling and we obviously don’t want that. Also, the oiled hair tend to attract more dirt and/or pollutants when exposed to the external environment. You can even switch to oil-based leave-in solutions like Forest Essentials Hair Thickening Spray (Bhringraj & Shikaki) and WOW Skin Science’s Amazon-famous Onion & Black Seed Oil for an, even more, easier and hassle-free experience.

And every once in a while we recommend you take the baby out – we tried Moroccanoil Hair Spa at Jean Claude Beguine in Mumbai, and loved it! Couldn’t keep our hands off our hair for weeks.

And in case you’re wondering – your scalp type is like your skin type. If you have combination to oily skin, you might possibly have an oily scalp. But your scalp care routine doesn’t need to be as elaborate as your multi-step skincare program. And just needs to be effective and targeted to your scalp needs after all you don’t want to overload the sensitive scalp skin which is already been affected with dirt, dead skin, sebum or product build-up. Therefore, we have found some of the most effective and easy to use products to calm and revive your stressed scalp. And if you happen to be a scalp care novice, these scalp solutions will truly set you up with a happy, healthy head of hair.
